CONFERENCE

First Annual Symposium

Hekhal: The Irish Society for the Study of the Ancient Near East

“The Other Temples”

25–27 May 2012

The role of the temple cult is extremely important for Judaism despite Deuteronomic centralisation never being fully realised. As such, other Jewish temples may offer a fruitful area for discussing the development of Judaism in the Ancient Near East. We are therefore calling for papers dealing with temple ideology and its material culture in the context of temples other than the one in Jerusalem, whether those be real ones such as Elephantine, Leontopolis or Gerizim, or conceptual ones like the Qumran Yahad or the new Jerusalem in Revelation. The committee would hope to receive submissions on topics as diverse as diaspora Judaism, early Christianity, Qumran, early Samaritan studies, and any other historiographic and/or archaeological fields of research referencing these paradigms.

The presentation of papers at this symposium will be around 40 minutes within a one-hour time slot, allowing ample time for discussion after each paper.

Cost and what’s included

The price of the conference to attendees will include conference pack, lunch and coffee breaks.  Lunch will be served in the coffee dock a few doors away from the conference room.  The lunch is basic, but good, and will include a vegetarian option.  But please do note that CITI is not set up to provide kosher/halal meals.

Payment

Payment for the conference can be made on the “Payment” page of this website. You can pay via Paypal or directly by electronic bank transfer. Please note that payment in advance for the conference is €50, whereas payment on the day of the conference is €60 (which includes lunch each day), and we will only be able to accept cash (Euros only) on the day itself.  For non-participants planning to come for specific days only, the cost is €20 per day (which includes lunch on that day).

For those wishing to stay on the CITI campus for the conference, there is good quality bed and breakfast accommodation, and it is very reasonably priced at €27.50 per night – a price almost unheard of in Dublin.  The cost of accommodation is one you will have to pay directly to CITI as it is not included in the price of attending the conference.  As at 19 May 2012, there are still rooms available at CITI.

The premises are lovely and the staff are friendly and helpful.  If you wish to stay at CITI, please contact the lovely Daphne at The Church of Ireland Theological Institute (CITI), Braemor Park, Dublin 14 tel: (+353) (0)1 492 3506  |  email: admin@theologicalinstitute.ie.
